CADAVERS ON DISPLAY - Museum La Specola

WAX ANATOMICAL MODELING
Address: Via Romana 17, Florence
Opening: Mon to Fri 9 am to 1 pm and Sat 9 am to 5 pm

Not for faint of stomach. Discover a quite creepy museum. Because a cadaver can be interesting, surely from a medical perspective...

Dissected Men from eighteen century

This section of La Specola Museums is not for faint of stomach. What is most shocking is the awsome collection of wax anatomical modeling: particulary faithful reproductions of dissected human cadavers.

A visual shorted with a deeply impressive guaranteed effect still today, but that certainly has a tradition much older given that all the waxes were made in the years between 1770 and 1850 (moreover this type of manufacturing begins to be realized in Florence as early as sixteenth century) with the purpose of developing medical and scientific studies.

I spent some time watching this woman, half "anatomically" naked, thinking if the artist Damien Hirst has not been here before of realizing his interpretation of Kate Moss for the cover of a famous New York magazine...
