Many painters and famous writers were inspired by the Protestant Cemetery in Florence...

Protestant Moumental Cemetery, Cimitero degli Inglesi

The Protestant Cemetery is located along two main boulevards, just a peacefull "island" between the noisy Viale Matteotti and Viale Gramsci.

It is one of the most curious Monumental Cemetery of the city also thanks to its location: it occupies the whole square and it is built on a little hill which has had and continues to have an extremely fascinating atmosphere.

Soon as crossed the gate, will welcome you a smiling nun, heavenly dressed in light blue and native English speaker. Of course you can ignore her. But if just smiling back you will earn a guided tour among the graves.

This cemetery was built around 1827 and are buried among the others Elizabeth Barret Browning, Arthut Clough, Giovan Pietro Viesseux and Beatrice Shakespeare (rest in peace, enjoying an immortal view on boulevards!).

Calls to mind the hill of Spoon River Anthology, the collection of poems where Edgar Lee Masters tells the life of each of the people buried in the cemetery of a small immaginary town in America.
Each poem is an epitaph written on the graves of the cemetery which is located just up the Hill! Through the voices of those who are gone, the poet tells their stories and the most intimate secrets.

Somebody says that the Swiss painter Arnold Böecklin, when he had his studio in Florence, was inspired by the Cimitero degli Inglesi to realize his dreamlike painting Isle of the dead.

Many have been fascinated by this painting: Freud was obsessed for all his life, Lenin had a copy in the bedroom, Hitler even bought three copies and I also couldn't look away the first time I saw it! Good walk guys, whereas... "all, all are sleeping on the Hill"

  1. By the way, last July a Florentine theater company has staged in the spaces of this cemetery - incredible but true - the Spoon River Anthology! There seems to be a rerun on the coming November... Maybe you can grab the occasion!
