IMMORTALE AMORE - The Church of Dante and Beatrice

SANTA MARGHERITA DEI CERCHI CHURCH
Address: Via Santa Margherita, Florence
How to go: Walk. Is in a narrow alley just off Via del Corso or from Via Calzaiuoli follow the tourist signs for the House of Dante

Stay away from visiting the House of Dante: it is always full of tourists and it is not too surprising. Rather, look for the little Medieval Church, documented as early 1032, which is only 20 meters away from the House...

The Medieval Church, better knows as Chiesa di Dante e Beatrice

Stay away from visiting the House of Dante: it is always full of tourists and it is not too surprising. Rather, look for the little Medieval Church, documented as early 1032, which is only 20 meters away from the House.

Entering the Church (admission free) the low lights and the soft music give the interior an intimate and romantic feeling. Will be delightful to imagine that the poet Dante usually came here to meet the eyes of his beloved Beatrice (a painting hung on the walls indeed represents they first met) even if those fleeting glances have been the only concession to their love. A love sublimated, desired, wanted, but never realized.

Inside the Church there is a marble plaque in honor of Miss Portinari, the famous Beatrice who inspired the poet. Next to the tomb that is said to be the one of Beatrice, there are a lot of papers with all the sort of love messages, left for Beatrice by the visitors.

Well, then leave also your note for her (..or for anyone else!): Dante will thank you for continuing to prove the eternity of his everlasting and immortal love.

Finally, and to defuse the whole just said (about everlasting and unique love), I must tell you that in this same Church then Dante married his real wife Gemma Donati!
